Summer Sounds Schedule

July 4th – Commodores Big Band

The Commodores Big Band was formed in 1975 by a group of musicians keen to play the big band style of music. Today the band’s repertoire has grown to over 1000 arrangements that include ballroom, latin, swing, rock and dixieland. Featured vocalist, Clare Wynters is accompanied by a standard big band configuration of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and rhythm section.

This band is a crowd favourite on the local scene as reflected in numerous repeat performances at the best venues all over town. Band members embrace a spirit of enthusiasm, drive and professionalism that has determined it’s success, longevity and popularity with fans of all ages.

July 11th – Ben Powell Quartet

A brilliant young jazz violinist, Ben Powell has absorbed much of the sound and approach of the great Stephane Grappelli and combined it with his own deep musicianship and contemporary attitude to produce jazz violin playing that is both technically scintillating and musically gratifying.

July 18th – Virtual Elvis

“Virtual Elvis” is a stage persona created by Scott MacDonald. Scott’s singing career started early as a member of Ottawa’s magnificent Christ Church Cathedral choir. He can remember his Choir Master and music teacher telling him to “take the Elvis out of it” even then.

In the early 1990s Scott happened to hear Elvis performing “American Trilogy” on TV and was spellbound by the “King’s” performance. At that moment he committed himself to a life long study of Elvis’ life and his music. He practiced his performances on friends and family and was soon entertaining at various venues throughout Ottawa. His talent was quite evident and he soon quit his day job to devote his time to his musical career.

Scott has definitely put the “Elvis” back in his music and has delighted thousands across the country from Halifax to Vancouver Island ever since.

July 25th – Folk Arts Quartet

Under the structural guise of a string quartet, the Folk Arts Quartet breaks musical molds by fusing the worlds of folk and chamber music to produce a cross-over genre they call “ChamberGrass.” With contemporary arrangements, they perform their own tunes alongside traditional Celtic & folk tunes.

Aug 1st – Paul Wainwright Band

Perennial favourite saxman Paul Wainwright has performed in Victoria and abroad for many years. His numerous cds continue to receive world wide airplay. He is joined by keyboardist Thomas Kinzel who at 25 has become one of the region’s most in demand performers and recording artists. Kinzel has played on dozens of cds and composes, produces and arranges for film and television.

They’ll be performing the music from their newly released cd Midnight Café – a collection of original and cover tunes played with their unique brand of urban sophistication. Drummer Mike O’Leary rounds out the trio with his unfailing beats.

They put the fun in the funk, it’s jazzy & upbeat – the kids love it too, get offa your seat!

Aug 8th – Timebenders

Now in their 18th year, the Timebenders’ show has delighted audiences all across North America, from Florida to Hawaii, Alaska to Acapulco and almost every point in between. They have performed for such renowned clients as Bill Gates, Dick Clark and Francis Ford Coppola as well as countless fortune 500 corporations.

Guaranteed crowd pleasers, the Timebenders’ show covers the best music from the 50’s to the 90’s with over 22 costume changes and hilarious impersonations of all the musical stars from those eras. Wildly interactive and extremely high-energy, this show is a hit and must see for the entire family! Come early for good seats.

Aug 15th – Jon and Roy

Jon and Roy are not gangstas. They are not hip like Gaga. Nor are they coordinated enough to choreograph themselves dancing on trampolines to music. BUT, they are an acoustic based roots rock-band from Victoria BC that works feverishly on their music and loves to play and create. They’ve just put out their second nationally released CD ‘Homes’ and will be touring relentlessly in its support. Please check out this 4-piece folk rock act that has a growing international audience and really likes to play shows here at home on Vancouver Island

Aug 22nd – The Sutcliffes

The Sutcliffes are a four piece musical juggernaut that take their passion and love of the The Beatles songbook to deliver a high energy show. They focus on the early Beatle classics and throw in an eclectic mix of tunes that are sure fire crowd pleasers, from Johnny Cash to Neil Diamond (!).

Over 300 shows of music and entertainment and the release of two live CDs have led to a fanatical following and an invite to Liverpool in 2009, where they played The Cavern Club as a part of that city’s annual Beatles week celebrations . If you have ever enjoyed a Beatles song you will not want to miss these lads from Victoria.

Aug 29th – HoneyCrooners

The Cool vibe and irreverent groove of the Rat Pack and other Las Vegas “royalty” in the glory days of the early 60’s are brought back to life by Tom Watson and the HoneyCrooners. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin and more all enjoy a loving salute by the HoneyCrooners compact orchestra. This show will be interactive and fun for everyone as they turn the Sidney waterfront into a “family-friendly” Las Vegas nightclub!

Sept 5th – Katzenjammers

For over twenty-six entertaining years, KATZENJAMMERS have been providing high energy, pop, classic rock, rhythm and blues, dance music … and low-key, soft, dinner and back-ground music for clients of varied demographic groups.

“Your group is so versatile! … Your mix of music, your presentation and professionalism was impeccable!” … We love the variety!” … are typical compliments paid to the band.

With Stephen Macdonald on guitar, Bradley Clarke on drums and vocals, Morry Stearns on keys and vocals, and Dennis Ferbey on bass and vocals KATZENJAMMERS pumps out the tunes. Sweet vocals and smooth instrumental accompaniment is the trademark.
